| You can use FTP to upload pages to your site. The primary file, or the
home page must be named index.htm or index.html.
Although you can use upper and lower case filenames it is a bad idea. Keep it simple and
always use lower case. Whether to use an extension of "htm" or "html"
is up to you. If you do not have a FTP package you can get one from the Support Utilities Page. (Learning how to use the software is
up to you. The ones listed are simple to understand and use.
- Configure the FTP client so that it can log on to your directory. You need the following
information.
- Your signon/userid. Provided with your account activation notice.
- The server you wish to upload to. The information here will vary depending on
whether you have a virtual or non-virtual account. (Virtual accounts get their own
domain name.)
If you nave a "Virtual" account, this will be your domain name
or IP address. Prime Choice recommends (at least at first) that you use your IP address
instead of your domain name at first because, it may take a while before your domain name
gets propagated throughout the Internet.
If you nave a "non-virtual" type of account this will be primechoice.com.
- If you have a place to specify a "directory" or "root directory"
leave this space blank. Your signon will place you in the correct uploading
directory when FTP logs in.
- Your Password. Provided with your account activation notice.
- Configure the file type to be "auto detect". This way the ftp client will
determine whether to transfer the file in binary or text mode.
- Connect to your site. The "remote" host box is the directory structure on your
Web Account.
- If necessary create directories to hold your image files. This depends on how you build
your web site. If you have an "image" directory on your local computer for
graphics, then you will want to create an "image" directory on the remote host.
- Transfer the files to the correct directories. For most "visual" FTP clients
this is a simple mater of highliting the file you wish to transfer and pressing the button
to send the files to the host. NOTE Be careful which way you transfer the
files, you could mistakenly transfer older "remote" files to your
"local" machine undoing a lot of hard work.
- You can if necessary delete files and directories on the "remote" machine. Be
careful to delete only files that you have uploaded or you may render your account
unusable.
